Which sort of wig is the best?

Human hair wigs look the most natural. They can be cut, styled, permed and colored just like your own hair. They are very durable and if well looked after will last you for many years.
They do need tender, loving care! Because they are real hair, they need to be shampooed, dried, styled and conditioned and sadly, they may lose their style if you get caught in the rain! They may also react to humidity and go frizzy.

You could also consider a blended wig which contains both human and synthetic hair. These still give a very natural look and these wigs hold their style better than 100% human hair ones.

Where does the hair come from?

There are four main types of hair used in wig making: Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and European.
Most human hair wigs are made with Chinese or Indian hair.
European hair is the strongest but is not so easily available and is more expensive.

Remy hair is hair that has been cut from the donor’s head in a certain direction and then kept in that direction when being made into a wig. This gives even more added realism and prevents tangling.

What different kinds of wigs are there?

The cap is the part of the wig onto which the hair is attached. There are different types of cap and hair is attached to them in various ways.

Standard Cap:   This is the most often used and most easily affordable cap. Layers of hair are machine-sewn onto the lacy fabric that the cap is made from. This type of cap gives good natural lift at the crown if you are looking for extra volume.

Capless Wig:   This is lighter and cooler to wear than a standard cap because of the way it’s constructed. It has vertical strips of lacy fabric with spaces between them.

Monofilament Caps:   These are made from thin, breathable fabric that allows some of the wearer’s own scalp to show through. This gives the most natural look of all the caps. To enhance this, each hair is tied on by hand so that the hair on the crown may be parted or brushed and will still look entirely natural. This is a very good one if you have partial or total hair loss as it’s the softest cap of all and is kind to sensitive scalps.

How do I know what size to choose?

To measure your size, take a tape measure around your head so that it makes a diagonal shape. It should rest on your ears - like spectacles - and go from the nape of your neck to your front hairline.
If you’re buying online, check the manufacturers sizing guide to make sure you order the right size. The size that most people need is 21½ inches to 22½ inches but measure your head just to be sure.

How do I wear it?

The front of your wig should sit at your natural hairline. This is roughly four fingers above your eyebrows. The back should be pulled down to meet your natural hairline at the back of your head.

Wigs have adjustable Velcro and elasticated tabs in the back so that you can be sure of getting a good fit. There are also tabs which sit in front of your ears and these can be adjusted to keep the wig sitting close to your face and not making a gap.

What color should I choose?

This is quite a difficult one especially if you’re buying online. Computer monitors vary in their color representation so it’s best to request a swatch or buy a full swatch card from the manufacturer. That way, you can be sure of getting what you want.

Get a haircut!

Most wigs actually have between 10 and 30% too much hair! That is to allow a professional stylist to give it minimal or significant shaping. This is one of the secrets to making your wig completely real and natural.

How should I care for my new wig?

Human hair wigs can be treated exactly like your own hair and that includes what hair products you use to shampoo them with! You can either use high quality products or those made especially for wig care.

What is cold set?

This is creases or kinks in the wig due to it having been stored in a tight box or packing. If your wig has arrived in the mail, it may have cold set.
To remove these, spray the creased area with water until it’s wet through and then comb very gently with a wig comb. Leave it to air dry.

It’s a good idea to invest in a wig stand or head to keep your wig on when not in use.
